Mountain Gorilla Census Reveals Increase in Population

AWF With the International Gorilla Conservation Programme Celebrates Conservation Win
AWF with our friends and supporters has been eagerly awaiting the results of the latest census of mountain gorillas in the Virunga Massif – and now the numbers are in!
The analysis, conducted in March and April 2010, indicates that there are a total of 480 mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) in 36 groups along with 14 solitary silverback males in the Virunga Massif, which includes three contiguous national parks: Parc National des Virunga in DRC, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. The only other location where mountain gorillas exist is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda.

Along with the 302 mountain gorillas censused in Bwindi in 2006 and four orphaned mountain gorillas in a sanctuary in DRC, this brings the total world population to 786 individuals.

The last census undertaken in the Virunga Massif was in 2003, when the population was estimated at 380 individuals. The current figure represents a 26.3% increase in the population of mountain gorillas in this area over the last seven years, which is a 3.7% annual growth rate. This increase in the population occurred despite the killing of no less than nine mountain gorillas, in four separate incidents, during this time period.

Of the 480 mountain gorillas censused, 352 (73%) were habituated (349 in groups and three solitary males) and 128 were unhabituated (117 in groups and 11 solitary males).
“This population has made an absolutely remarkable recovery from the approximately 250 individuals that existed only three decades ago.

This recovery is due to the relentless collaborative efforts of many organizations and institutions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda,” stated Dr. Augustin Basabose, Coordinator of Species at the International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP), a coalition of African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), Fauna & Flora International, and the World Wide Fund for Nature.

Learn to Paint Color Course – MUST SEE VIDEO!!!

Learn about color Videos!

I’ve got some pretty exciting news for all you artists out there.

As you know by now, in all the years I have been sending out my free newsletters and blog I have NEVER promoted anyone’s products excluding my own ha… :-)

The reason for that is pretty simple; I’ve NEVER been 100% happy with other peoples products. It’s why I write my own ebooks.

Well that was until my good mate Richard produced his own course on “Mastering Color” . I’ve known Richard for a few years and he’s as meticulous as I am, so I knew this was going to be something special – and I believe it really is.

I ran through the course from start to finish myself, and even after all my years painting I still learnt some new things.

This Video course is just brilliant for beginners to advanced.

Well I’ll leave the details up to Richard to explain, so to learn more just click on the photo below or the link. It really is something everyone struggling with color or wanting to learn more about it should see.

Local Photographs – The Black Mountains

Some photographs I took locally on the weekend. The area is the Black Mountains in South Wales, UK.

Rape oil fields (above) might not b egreat for our health, but they are fantastic subjects to photograph :-)

Some scenes just need to be done as a panoramic just to show the vastness (above).

The 2 photos above are done in HDR deliberately pushing the contrast in the clouds to give a surreal effect – hope you like them.

The New Wildlife Art Ebook “On my Easel” ALMOST READY!

Well as the title of this post says, the BRAND NEW ebook is almost ready, I think it will be online and ready to purchase in about 2 days!

Needless to say I have been working VERY hard on it!

This ebook started off as an idea of putting almost all of the demos I have done on my tutorial site / blogs / forum posts etc the last 8 + years,  in one easy to read place as I thought it would be a great instructional tool and resource for wildlife artists and would be wildlife and animal artists, who wanted to see the stages I went through to take a painting from start to completion.

Sounded simple enough to me at the time, but when I began to gather all my demos, photos, text etc  it became plainly obvious that this project was going to turn out to be MUCH larger than I expected. Which is great for the artists reading it, but not so great for me compiling it. ha…….

It got so large in fact that I have even had to split it up in to 2 Volumes!!!

Each volume will have approx 150+ photos showing my painting at various stages! and lots of text and description to go with them.

Anyone familiar with me and my work will know I can get a bit obsessive with details. Ha… so as you can imagine I have also updated most of the text that went with the demos, expanding on it a great deal, and also adding a tips section too.

I had the idea Of calling the E-books “On My Easel.  Take a sneaky look over my shoulder as I paint”. Because that is really what they are, I have even included my previously sold tips on loading your brush to achieve fine lines and my basics of painting fur pages (2 pages), just so everyone can see exactly how I paint fur :) and also my fur painting article from the Artists & Illustrators magazine! so you will now get to see that without even buying the magazine :-)

I’m really happy with the way the books have turned out and they really bring you up to day with the methods I use to paint today!

I’m just putting the finishing touches to my website so that I can release volume 1 and it will be all ready to go :-)

If anyone has any questions please just drop me an email-  jason@onlineart.f9.co.uk or post on the blog

Volume 2 will hopefully be released 1-2 weeks after volume 1.

BTW I have been working REAL HARD for days to put all of my demos and “on my easel” tutorials that I’ve done over the past 8-10 years as 2 ebooks, each one will be 50 odd pages in length and about 150 ish photos! so lots of details showing how I have tackled each subject, I hope they will be of use to some. Ishould have the 1st volume done in a couple more days.
