Why is acrylics used for the underpainting rather than oil? Just a bit confused.. and when underpainting is the acrylics applied with thin strokes or washes?

Unfortunately I haven't been to see wild tigers yet - it's certainly something I would like to see one day. Great site and blog you have there BTW :)

Beautiful!! Nice use of light.

Seeing wild tigers was an amazing experience for me . . . I did some safaris into Ranthambore, India, and at one point, was about 4 meters away from a wild tiger eating a deer!! Amazing stuff.

Interesting blog! Great to see someone teaching something, amongst the usual "lots of things for sale" type blogs!

Have you seen tigers in the wild? I did several safaris into Ranthambore a few years ago, which was amazing . . . I was about 4 meters from a wild tiger eating a sambur at one point! A few of my (not great!) photos from that are on my site (There's a blog post on that trip).

Also, a quick comment on where to find reference photos . . . I've included a link to someone who sells specific wildlife art reference photos on my page . . .

http://www.wildlife-art-guide.com/wildlife-art-create-your-own.htm

plus I mention photo libraries.

I have recently started a wildlife art blog, also on the same site as above . . . I'd be interested in any comments of course,

all the best

Jason, I thought as much, but your comment "I wanted a good underpainting to work from – hence the acrylics" threw me and had me thinking there must be another advantage. I look forward to watching this one come to life.

Looking good Jason! This will be another very useful tutorial.

Other than the fact that the acrylics dry quickly, what is it about them that makes them preferable at this underpainting stage?
